Aventura is a city located in northeastern Miami-Dade County, Florida. The city name is from the Spanish word for adventure and was named Aventura because of the Aventura Mall in the city. The population was 25,267 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S Census estimates of 2005, the city had a population of 29,391. [link]
History
Most of what would later become the city of Aventura was planned during the 1970s when the area was all swampland (and was called biscayne gardens at the time) by Turnberry International Realty as a high-rise residential area, and some of Miami's tallest condominium towers are located there. Aventura is also home to Aventura Mall, also developed and owned by Turnberry. The enormous success of the mall encouraged explosive growth in the area, and in November 7th, 1995, the City of Aventura was incorporated.Geography
Aventura is located at (25.964345, -80.135818).[Geographic references#1GR1]According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it (23.08%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 25,267 people, 14,000 households, and 6,691 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,613.2/km² (9,344.7/mi²). There were 20,020 housing units at an average density of 2,862.9/km² (7,404.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.78% White, 1.70% African American, 0.07% Native American, 1.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.45% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.65% of the population.There were 14,000 households out of which 11.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.6% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 52.2% were non-families. 45.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.79 and the average family size was 2.45.
In the city the population was spread out with 10.1% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 35.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 53 years. For every 100 females there were 80.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $44,526, and the median income for a family was $59,507. Males had a median income of $50,791 versus $37,682 for females. The per capita income for the city was $41,092. About 5.6% of families and 9.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.5% of those under age 18 and 8.5% of those age 65 or over.
