Avila Beach, California
Encyclopedia : A : AV : AVI : Avila Beach, California
Avila Beach is a town in San Luis Obispo County, California, USA with a population of 797.
The positioning of Avila Beach leads to a nice climate, protected coastline, and a fairly warm ocean compared to other beaches on the Central Coast. The beach has a 1,685-foot pier used for strolling and fishing. Avila is also known for its hot springs, which are used for resort spas. A large oil spill was found in under the town in the 1990s. After years of negotiation, Unocal agreed to a thirty million dollar settlement. Many of the town's homes and business were demolished in the cleanup process. The contaminated soil was excavated and replaced with clean fill. The remaining money was used to rebuild the town. In 2003, tourism temporarily declined after a fatal shark attack shortly after the construction was completed. However, as of 2005, the town and its tourism industry are recovering.
