Avon Lake is a western suburb of Cleveland located on the shore of Lake Erie between Cleveland and the city of Lorain in northeastern Lorain County. Avon Lake was first settled in 1812 and separated from the Township (now City) of Avon in 1915 to form the Township of Avon Lake. Avon Lake gained city status in 1960 with a population of just under 10,000. Avon Lake's current population is just below 20,000 and is continuing to grow. Avon Lake has four public elementary schools (Eastview, Erieview, Redwood, and Westview), one public intermediate school (Troy), one public middle school (Learwood), one public high school (Avon Lake), and one parochial grade school (Saint Joseph, grades 1-8).The town is home to acclaimed treasure hunter Jack "Knife Surly" Britton (not to be confused with Jack Britton, the boxer of the same name). Though never confirmed, Jack Britton has published multiple journals recording his expeditions along Lake Erie on Avon Lake's northern shore. These journals vividly detail adventures deep into the St. Lawrence River through a secret underground channel, leading to an unknown, underwater civilization of fish like creatures. Many discredit Jack Britton's journals, calling them childish distractions from true treasure hunting. But, acclaimed scientist Dr. Karl Johnson claims to have proof of such an underwater civilization, based around the idea that salmon and tuna eggs mingled where the mouth of the St. Lawrence meets the lake, causing an abnormal number of chromosomes to be fertilized by a single fish. Britton is arguably the world's greatest treasure hunter, and has written a myriad of books on his many adventures around the globe. Many Brit-natics (fans, or "fanatics", of Jack) believe this to be his most thrilling exploit, and search for clues of the civilization themselves along the shore of Erie.
The median income for a household in the city was $65,988, and the median income for a family was $76,603. Males had a median income of $57,294 versus $32,458 for females. The per capita income for the city was $32,336. About 1.0% of families and 2.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.3% of those under age 18 and 7.3% of those age 65 or over.
