Awty International School

Encyclopedia : A : AW : AWT : Awty International School

The Awty International School is a [private school] located in [Houston], [Texas], [USA], for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. It is a certified international school and the second largest in the United States. The school prides itself on having a very high proportion of students from around the world, and on its high academic standards.

Awty is comprised of two sections: the International Section, in which classes are taught primarily in English, and the French Bilingual Section, in which classes are conducted in either French or English. Each year Awty enrolls approximately 1100 students. Only about 30 percent of these students are American, while another 30 percent are French nationals, and the remaining 40 percent represent over 50 other nationalities.

The school requires all International Section students in grades 11 and 12 to follow the rigorous IB Diploma Programme prescribed by the International Baccalaureate. This program of study culminates in a series of subject-specific, externally-assessed examinations which take place in May of the 12th grade year. High school students in the French Bilingual Section must follow a curriculum designed to prepare them for the French Baccalauréat, which is administered in June of the Terminale year (the French equivalent to grade 12), just as in France.

The Head of School is Dr. David Watson. Mr. Jean Stephan is Deputy Head and Proviseur for the French Bilingual Section. Mme. Chantal Vessali is Head of Pre- & Lower Schools, while Mr. Tom Beuscher is Head of Middle School and Mr. Samuel P. Waugh is Head of Upper School.
