Axel and Eigil Axgil

Axel and Eigil Axgil were the first gay couple to enter into a civil union anywhere in the world following Denmark's legalisation of same-sex partnership registration in 1989.
Their ceremony took place in Copenhagen on 1st October 1989, accompanied by worldwide media attention.
The couple had been partners for 40 years prior to this. The Axgils adopted that surname in 1957 by combining parts of their respective first names.
