Ayala was originally a Maquis freedom-fighter on Chakotay's ship. The vessel was destroyed after both it and Voyager were transported to the Delta Quadrant. Ayala joined Voyager
Ayala initially served in Main Engineering and at Ops when Ensign Kim wasn't on duty, but later transferred and settled in security. He was often seen on the bridge as a relief tactical officer, to take over for Tuvok when he left the bridge.
In the Voyager episode "Twisted, Ayala was once left in command while the ship was affected by a distortion ring being, and the senior staff was confined to the holodecks.
In 2378, Ayala transferred from Security to the command division (red shirt), and served as a relief helmsman when Tom Paris wasn't on duty. (as seen the Voyager episode "Renaissance Man") Later that year, he returned to Earth with the rest of the Voyager crew.
Ayala appeared in the background of almost every episode, more than any other "named extra". He spoke in a handful of episodes, but never more than a line or two of dialogue. In fact, he is the only character other than the regulars to appear in both the pilot episode and the finale.
