Aysel Sengün was noted for being the girlfriend, fiance, and unofficial spouse, of 9/11 hijacker Ziad Jarrah.
She met Jarrah in 1996, when he was 21 years old and studying at the University of Greifswald. They met in Bochum, where she was studying dentistry at the Ruhr University.
On April 1st 1999, Sengun and Jarrah announced that they were now unofficially to be considered married. That November, Jarrah told her that he was leaving to visit his family in Lebanon, although she suspected he may actually be heading to meet with Chechnyan fighters, and many have since claimed he spent this time training at Afghan camps. Regardless, he returned in February 2000 with gifts of jewelry and clothing for her.[link] It was at this point that he announced he was dropping out of University to study as a pilot.
In January 2001, she visited Jarrah at his American quarters, and accompanied him to a flight school where she sat with him as he flew Boeing flight simulators. He reciprocated by flying to Bochum to visit her in late February, and then again in early March after returning to Lebanon to look after his father who had just suffered a heart attack.
On September 11th, 2001, she said that Jarrah phoned her and told her three times that he loved her, but wouldn't reply to her queries of what was bothering him, before he hung up shortly afterwards. After she reported him missing to the German police, she was taken into protective custody and entered the witness protection program several weeks later to adopt a new identity. She, along with Jarrah's uncle Jamal, have been public however at saying they didn't believe Jarrah was among the hijackers, and was an innocent bystander killed aboard the flight like the rest of the passengers.
In 2002, Sengun gave testimony at the Hamburg trial of Mounir el-Motassadeq. [link]
