Ayya
Encyclopedia : A : AY : AYY : Ayya
Ayya is a Pali term often used as a veneration in addressing or referring to ordained female Theravadan monks. It can refer to either a bhikkhuni (wearing saffron robes) or a novice renunciant, but generally not to non-ordained nuns. In Thailand, nuns are known as mae chees (also spelled "Mae ji)."
