The
Vaikunda Avataram is celebrated on the 20th day of the
Tamil Month of Masi, the date on which Lord Vaikundar is said to have arisen from the sea of Thiruchendur as the son of Mummorthies to destroy the evil spirit of
Kali and transform the
Kaliyukam into Dharmayukam. A grand procession from
Thiruchendur to
Nagercoil takes place on the 19th of Masi, representing the way of Vaikundar after the Avataram to Dhetchanam, and another procession from Thiruvananthapuram to Nagercoil takes place on the same date, representing the release of Lord Vaikundar from the Jail of Singarathoppe. They meet at Nagercoil in the evening, and early the next morning, on the 20th of Masi,
the Vaikunda Avatara Orvalam goes from Nagercoil to Swamithoppe with several tens of thousands of devotees. This is one of the largest festivals of the district, and attracts a good crowd from outside the state.
