Ayyappa Nagar is one of the prominent communities in Madipakkam, which is a southern suburb of Chennai(formerly known as Madras), in Tamil nadu, India.
It is mostly a residential area. The place was name after the Lord Ayyappa temple that was built here. The temple is quite famous for it has the unique 18 steps just like sabarimala.
The new madipakkam lake was desilted in 2002/03 and that helped improve the water table of the area.
It has 18 streets and extends from Sabari Salai till Keelkattalai.
Its a little low lying area compared to adjacent moovarsampet area, and water flows into the lake from these place during the rainy season. Its got 2 hospitals GM hospital and Padhuvai. There no specific shops to mark except for the a couple of potti kadai's(petty shops), though they are becoming more sophisticated, a saloon, a public telephone booth.
There is a welfare association which conducts elections every 2 years. Pretty much old timers are elected to the board. It belongs to the panchayat of the village of Madipakkam as per govt regulations, though the sheer population of madipakkam is much higher to be considered a village still. Probably one of the few places in madipakkam which had its bit of urban planning and road layout done a little better. There are a couple of big slums in the lakeview 1st street.
The Ayyappan Temple has recently opened a big hall as its annexure and its pretty much equipped. Every year for New years (Jan 1) annadanam(free food to people) takes place in the temple with support of the community thorough its various forms of donations in the temple, which brings huge crowd. Apart from that Vishu(malayali new years in April) and Jothi(coinciding with pongal in jan) brings a lot of people to the temple.
Its pretty close to schools like Prince and Sai..and almost every engg college worth its name operates a college bus through this area.
