Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL, Azeri: Azərbaycan Hava Yolları) is an airline based in Baku, Azerbaijan. It is the state-owned national airline operating scheduled passenger and cargo services from Baku to the CIS, Europe, China and the Middle East. Its main base is Heydar Aliyev International Airport (BAK). The airline was established and started operations on 7 April 1992. It has a 100% holding in subsidiary airline AZAL Avia Cargo and has 4280 employees.

Azerbaijan Airlines operates services to the following international scheduled destinations (at June 2006): Aktau, Ankara, Dubai, İstanbul, Kiev, London, Milan, Mineralnye Vody, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Paris, Tbilisi, Tehran, Tel Aviv, Ürümqi.Fleet

Accidents
On December 23, 2005 an Azerbaijani Airlines An-140 plunged onto the Caspian Sea shore about 20 miles north of the capital, Baku. All 18 passengers and five crewmembers were killed. The plane was on its way to Aktau. The airliner has grounded its other remaining An-140 airplane, and also postponed plans to purchase more of the type aircraft from the Ukraine.Disputes
Since 2005, Azerbaijan Airlines has run a few charter flights direct from Baku to Ercan International Airport, in the (unrecognized) Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, in direct defiance of the international embargo.External links
