} The azygous vein drains blood from the posterior intercostal veins and delivers it to the superior vena cava. The azygous vein runs parallel to the spinal column to the right of the mid line. It receives blood from the hemi-azygous vein which runs on the left side.

The azygous vein is named after the Dutch anatomist Johannes Azygous who first described its course in 1546.
