BART Police
Encyclopedia : B : BA : BAR : BART Police
The BART Police is the police force of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART).
The BART Police Department has primary law enforcement jurisdiction on all property owned or operated by the BART District. BART police officers are fully sworn California Peace Officers with law enforcement authority extending throughout California. The department is led by Gary Gee who is the Chief of Police. The BART Police department has a special division dealing with graffiti and vandalism, the TAG Team, and its own SWAT team.
For additional backup, the San Francisco Police Department will assist the officers on BART.
Additionally, BART Police work hand in hand with Oakland Police to address robbery issues around the MacArthur station. In other high-crime areas such as Pittsburg and Richmond they assist local law enforcement by providing unofficial patrol to areas immediately around stations.
The major drawback of the BART Police is that they must cover such a vast area in one-person cars. BART officers make traffic stops and arrests with only limited backup. Nonetheless, BART Police are widely respected in Bay Area law enforcement and are also quite well paid.
