BBC Knowledge

BBC Knowledge was an early BBC digital television channel, available by cable, satellite, or terrestrial digital broadcasting, providing a strong programme of documentary, cultural and educational television. It launched on 1 June 1999 broadcasting 6 hours of educational material a day.
On 17 November 2001, the channel began broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At the same time, BBC Knowledge moved from the SDN multiplex to the BBC multiplex on the DTT (ITV Digital) service.
On 2 March 2002 it was closed to be replaced by BBC Four. Given that the BBC television service was only suspended during the war, and renamed BBC 1 in 1964, this meant that BBC Knowledge was the first ever BBC television channel to be closed down permanently.
BBC Knowledge's output was educational, and it initially had a 'bright and breezy' schedule [link] however due to very low viewing figures this was altered to be a more serious documentary channel within a year. Programming included a GCSE survival guide based upon the popular BBC series "Bitesize", this was named "Bitesize Etc".
