BBC Radio Manchester is a BBC Local Radio station broadcasting to the city of Manchester and surrounding areas. It originally launched on September 10, 1970 as the first local radio in the city. It changed name to BBC GMR in 1988, before reverting to its original title on April 3, 2006. It broadcasts between the hours of 5am and 1am, with a 24-hour schedule planned for June.
The first voice heard on the station was that of long-time local personality and Radio Manchester breakfast presenter Terry Christian, with the first song being Manchester by The Beautiful South. Other presenters on the station include Allan Beswick with his long-running phone in, Eamonn O'Neal and Becky Want. Former Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati is expected to join the lineup within the next few months.
BBC Radio Manchester broadcasts from studios in Oxford Road via a transmitter at Holme Moss, with a small repeater at Saddleworth covering parts of East Manchester. It can also be heard on DAB radio and via internet streaming.
