BBC Radio Swindon
Encyclopedia : B : BB : BBC : BBC Radio Swindon
BBC Radio Swindon is the BBC Local Radio service for the English town of Swindon. It broadcasts from its studios in Swindon (which it shares with Radio Wiltshire) on 103.6 FM and DAB. There is no MW service, this being kept by Radio Wiltshire, which has a much wider area. It has been partially separate from its Wiltshire media cousin since 11 November 2002.
The transmitter at Blunsdon, 2 miles north of Swindon next to a large hill on the A419 with a terrain height of 450ft, is not particularly strong so as to not interfere with the more powerful 103.7FM signal of BBC WM near Shipston on Stour - for the convenience of listeners of BBC Coventry & Warwickshire not Radio Swindon.
Radio Wiltshire and Radio Swindon have different morning programmes but share the same early afternoon programmes. Unlike some gentle-mannered BBC local radio stations that insist on playing everything safe, Radio Swindon can often make you choke on your coffee, taking no prisoners. Maybe its competitor, GWR FM (Swindon), has fired their imaginations.
In the evening, from 7pm until 10pm, the station shares programmes with those BBC local radio stations in the Points West BBC News area. From 10pm until 1am, all BBC local radio stations in the South West have the same programme. Being in the east of Wiltshire, Swindon listeners can clearly pick up Radio Oxford and it is possible to receive the Milton Keynes Three Counties Radio.
