BBEdit is a text editor originally developed for Macintosh System Software 6 and now for Mac OS X. It is made by Bare Bones Software. BBEdit is not a word processor, meaning it does not have text formatting or page layout features. BBEdit's audience includes programmers and web designers. Bare Bones Software also made a free and less-featured version of BBEdit called BBEdit Lite. Bare Bones Software discontinued BBEdit Lite at version 6.1 and replaced it with TextWrangler, which initially cost money (though significantly less than BBEdit), but several years later was released for free.

BBEdit supports syntax highlighting for a wide variety of popular computer languages. It also contains powerful multi-file text searching capabilities including strong support for Perl-compatible regular expressions. BBEdit allows the easy previewing and debugging of HTML and Perl and provides built-in prototypes for most HTML constructs. It also includes FTP and SFTP tools and integrates with code management systems. BBEdit readily shows differences between file versions and allows for the merging of changes.

BBEdit is among the more notable text editors available for the Macintosh platform. Its use is ubiquitous among web designers, and many applications and integrated development environments (IDEs) provide direct support for using BBEdit as a third-party source code editor.
