The BTR-40 armored personnel carrier was developed in 1950 by a team headed by V. A. Dedkov and was produced from 1950 to 1958 at Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod. BTR stands for Bronetransporter (БТР, Бронетранспортер, literally "armoured transporter") []. The vehicle was based on the GAZ-63 truck. The hull had two side doors for commander and driver and a back door for up to eight passengers.
