The BTR-40 armored personnel carrier was developed in 1950 by a team headed by V. A. Dedkov and was produced from 1950 to 1958 at Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod. BTR stands for Bronetransporter (БТР, Бронетранспортер, literally "armoured transporter") [†]. The vehicle was based on the GAZ-63 truck. The hull had two side doors for commander and driver and a back door for up to eight passengers.

- BTR-40A (1951) - air defence vehicle, armed with ZPTU-2 double KPV 14.5 mm machine gun.
- BTR-40B (1956) - received armored roof. The crew was down to 2+6.
- BTR-40V (1957) - received improved tires pressure regulation system.
- BTR-40RH - chemical reconnaissanse vehicle.
- BTR-40ZhD (1969) - experimental vehicle equipped with railroad wheels.
- Type 55 - Chinese version.
