Encyclopedia : B : BA : BAB : Baba Gana Kingibe

Alhaji Baba Gana Kingibe is an Ambassador for the AU serving as its Special Representative in the Sudan.

Political Career

Baba entered the Nigerian political scene by initially campaigning for the presidency for the elections scheduled for 1993. He later backed fellow contender MKO Abiola as a Vice-presidential running mate in the same election. The pair won the electoral majority although the result was annulled by abdicating president General Ibrahim Babangida.

Baba served as the Foreign Minister of Nigeria from 1993 to 1995 during General Sani Abacha's tenure as President. This was a tumultuous period for Nigeria's political history culminating with allegations of human rights abuses against Abacha's regime and outcry against the public execution of nine minority rights activists leading to the country's ban from the Commonwealth. This ban was officially lifted on May 29, 1999, coinciding with the country's return to civilian rule.

Baba also served as MInister of Internal Affairs and Minister of Power and Steel until Abacha's death in 1998.
