Backcombing

Backcombing is a way of combing hair which is used to create volume as well as to create certain hairstyles. Backcombing, also known as "teasing," means literally repeatedly combing the hair backwards towards the scalp, causing the hair to tangle and knot up. Robert Smith of The Cure use the method of backcombing to make his hair into his famous big style.
This method is often used in creating various "big hair" styles such as mohawks (when backcombed, known as deathhawks) and dreadlocks.
