Encyclopedia : B : BA : BAD : Bad Gastein

--> Bad Gastein is a city in Austria, situated in the middle of the National Park Hohe Tauern, at 1,000 metres above sea level, in fresh mountain air.

The characteristic charm of this beautiful village, the buildings from the “Belle Epoque” era, harmonise in the natural surroundings. An international health resort with a unique atmosphere - relax and rest in pure mountain air, combined with the ideal climate altitude, and Gastein’s thermal water, guarantees a very special holiday for sophisticated guests!

Snow secure, attractive runs, cross-country tracks, covering all degrees of difficulty makes it one of the prominent and traditional ski resorts of Austria. It hosted the Alpine ski world championship in 1958.

The summer will also make sure of unforgettable experiences, while running and Nordic walking, or even just plain old fashioned walking along the wonderful paths in and around the National Park Hohe Tauern.

The small city of Bad Gastein once was a very famous resort, visited by Kings and the Rich and Famous. Some of the persons who frequented Bad Gastein in the past are the Austrian Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) and German Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia Wilhelm. From the sixties of the 20th century on the resort lost its popularity. It is trying to win it back through winter sports. It also has built a Congress Centre, hoping to attract more visitors that way. Slowly the popularity of the resort and the Gastein Valley (Gasteinertal) is rising again.
