Encyclopedia : B : BA : BAL : Balad, Iraq
Balad (Arabic: بلد) is a city 50 miles (80 kilometres) north of Baghdad in Iraq. It is located within the borders of the so-called Sunni triangle; however, Balad is a primarily Shiite town. The town has remained relatively quiet throughout the U.S. invasion in comparison to surrounding areas, and has benefited from the troops' presence greatly. It should be noted Balad suffered greatly under the rule of Saddam.
