Balad al-Shaykh massacre
Encyclopedia : B : BA : BAL : Balad al-Shaykh massacre
Balad al-Shaykh, was an Arab village in Palestine, now part of the Israeli town of Nesher. On December 31 1947 the Palmach, an arm of the Haganah, or Jewish militia, attacked the town in retribution for the killing of 39 Jews during the Haifa Oil Refinery massacre the day before. Between 12 (Hogan and Isseroff) and 60 (Lockerman, although Hogan and Isseroff state that this was killed and wounded) Palestinian Arabs (including women and children) were killed, and several dozen houses destroyed.
