Ballston Spa is a village in Saratoga County, New York in the USA. The population was 5,556 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Saratoga County[Geographic references#6GR6]. The name is from Eliphalet Ball, an early settler.
The Village of Ballston Spa lies on the border of two towns and is partly in the Town of Ballston and partly in the Town of Milton. New York State Route 50 passes through the village.
History
The village was first settled in 1771 and incorporated in 1807.
- It was formerly famous due to a mineral water spring used for healing, and for the San Souci Hotel, which in the early 18th century was the largest in the United States and one of the largest in the world
- Ballston Spa is home to the National Bottle Museum
- Ballston Spa is the birthplace of Abner Doubleday, believed by many to be the creator of baseball
- Portions of the novel "The Last of the Mohicans" were written in the present day Brookside Museum and inspired by the local landscape
- Is the basis for the fictional town of "Bath" in the novel and film "Nobody's Fool"
- A scene in the 1973 Barbara Streisand/Robert Redford film "The Way We Were" was filmed at Ballston Spa's Medberry Hotel.
- Was home to the Ballston Knitting Company from 1918 to 1994
- Was known (in the 18th and 19th centuries) for its healing springs, including the Hawthorne and Lithia Springs
- The square bottom paper bag was invented there.
Geography
Ballston Spa is located at (43.007185, -73.851168)[Geographic references#1GR1].According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.62% is water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 5,556 people, 2,267 households, and 1,385 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,340.7/km² (3,464.8/mi²). There were 2,398 housing units at an average density of 578.7/km² (1,495.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.33% White, 1.17% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.61% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.94% of the population.There were 2,267 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.9% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the village the population was spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,173, and the median income for a family was $49,387. Males had a median income of $36,929 versus $27,281 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,237. About 7.4% of families and 10.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.8% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of those age 65 or over.
Famous Citizens
Madeleine Deirdre Roy resided in Ballston Spa from 1995 to 2005. Madeleine is a world renowned flute player who has been part of orchestra formations for such broadway shows as CATS, Showboat, and Crazy For You. She also loves to be emailed many times a day.Abner Doubleday, American Civil War hero and inventor of Baseball was born in Ballston Spa, and the house he was born in is still there and is a New York State landmark.
