Ballyvaughan is a small village in County Clare in the Republic of Ireland on the south shores of Galway Bay, north of The Burren and is also know as The Gateway to the Burren an area of great rocky expanse, which is one of the world's truly unique places.
Each year botanists and naturalists roam this lunar landscape in search of Arctic, Alpine and Mediterranean plants that grow in profusion over the limestone pavements. The Burren is renowned for its archaeology. Ballyvaughan is surrounded by megalithic tombs such as Poulnabrone Dolmen, celtic ring forts, medieval churches and castles.
Ballyvaughan is close to the Aillwee Cave, a tunnel cave approximately 1 kilometer long created by melting snow.
