Bamberger's was a regional department store chain founded in 1893. Its original flagship store was located in Newark, New Jersey at the corner or Market and Washington Streets. In 1929, Bamberger's was purchased by R.H. Macy Co. It was converted to Macy's New Jersey on October 5, 1986. At the time of the name change to Macy's, Bamberger's operated 24 department stores. In 1988 Macy's New Jersey was consolidated with sister division Macy's New York to form Macy's Northeast (now Macy's East).
WOR history
WOR-AM radio was started by Bamberger Broadcasting Service 1922 in an effort to sell more radios. The broadcast studio was located on the 6th floor. The radio station was included as part of the sale to R.H. Macy Co. in 1929, and Bamberger Broadcasting Service became a division on the company. WOR-TV, Channel 9 signed on the air on October 11, 1949 becoming the last of the New York City VHF stations to begin operations. WOR-TV studios were located on 42nd Street in New Amsterdam Theater, which is currently home to Disney's smash hit, The Lion King. Macy's/Bamberger's sold the WOR stations to the General Tire and Rubber Company in 1952.Former locations
