Banana is a pejorative term used to describe people who are of East Asian descent, thus considered "Yellow Skinned," but think, act, and react as a stereotypical Caucasian or non-Asian would. It is particularly used to describe women who have become highly assimilated into Western culture and/or married Caucasians. It is usually used to refer to people of east Asian origin living in Western countries (e.g. Asian Americans with ancenstry from east Asia).
Variations
There are many variations of the term, "banana." One may also use: "Twinkie, Creampuff, or Deep-Fried Shrimp Ball. Persons who are half Asian, half Chinese are sometimes called: "Banana Milkshakes, Banana-Vanilla Ice Cream, and/or Diluted Piss." Someone who is of Asian descent and acts like one of Afro-American descent or who have parents who are black or Asian are called "Chocolate Cheesecakes." All these terms are generally viewed as offensive and highly politically incorrect.Reverse?
The opposite of the term "Banana" is "egg" - a white person who acts as a person from east Asia or a "Reverese Twinkies." A person who is an "egg," is thought to socialize with or around Asians more than with Caucasians.Usage
The term "Banana," and all of its variations are commonly used by Chinese Americans to refer to other American-born Chinese. It is also increasingly used by native Chinese to describe Chinese Americans or of those who are based in non-Asian countries. It is a synonym of jook-sing.In Culture
Banana Boys is a novel by Terry Woo about a group of Chinese males recounting the past and bringing to light issues they faced while growing up in Canadian society.In the film Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Harold says that his Korean friend would call him a twinkie - "Yellow on the outside, white on the inside".
Equivalent terms
- Apple - is used for American Indians who are perceived to be Indian on the outside and white on the inside
- Coconut - refers to people who are "brown" (either Hispanic or South Asian) on the outside and "white" (Caucasian) on the inside
- Oreo - refers to someone who is black (African American) on the outside and "white" (Caucasian) on the inside; "oreo" may also be a derogatory term referred to one who is of both White and Black descent.
- Uh-Oh! Oreo is the opposite of the aformentioned Oreo. It is when someone is "white" on the outside but acts "black" on the inside.
