Bangweulu Wetlands
Encyclopedia : B : BA : BAN : Bangweulu Wetlands
The Bangweulu Wetlands or Bangweulu Swamp lies in northern Zambia, east of Lake Bangweulu, around the Luapula River and its tributaries. Grassy floodplains lie south of the wetlands, acting as an extension of the region in the wet season.
The wetlands are known for wildlife including the near-endemic black lechwe, various other antelopes, elephants, buffalo, pelicans, spoonbills, flamingos and many other birds.
The wetlands are known for being one of the few breeding grounds of the Shoebill, a large stork-related bird that nests on the ground. The Bangweulu Swamp wetland reserve is of particularly importance as the Shoebill is classified as an endangered species (near threatened) and only has about 2 offspring maximum per year.
