Bankstown Airport is a general aviation airport located in Bankstown, 22 km from the central business district of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The airport is situated on 3.13 km² of land and has three parallel runways, several apron areas and a small passenger terminal. Bankstown Airport, generally considered the centre of Australian general aviation, is home to numerous fixed-wing and helicopter flying schools, charter operators, aircraft maintenance businesses, and private aircraft. In terms of annual aircraft movements it is the busiest airport in the country and the fifth-busiest in the world.
Established in 1940, it was an important base during World War Two for RAAF, Royal Australian Navy and USAAF aircraft. Of particular importance were the manufacuring facilities of De Havilland, producing large numbers of De Havilland Tiger Moth trainers, De Havilland Mosquito bombers, and other aircraft for the war effort.
The airport’s three parallel runways are 11L/29R (1100 m), 11C/29C (1415 m), and 11R/29L (1042 m). Until recently, the airport possessed a fourth runway, 18/36, but this was closed in early July, 2005. Runway 11C/29C, the primary runway, is equipped for night operations with three stage high intensity edge lights and a Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI). Bankstown Airport is a General Aviation Airport Procedures (GAAP) facility with its own control tower. Air traffic control services are provided by Airservices Australia.
Bankstown Airport is owned by Bankstown Airport Limited, a subsidiary of BAC Airports Pty Limited. BAC Airports also owns Camden Airport, another of the three general aviation airports in the Sydney basin. Bankstown Airport’s business precincts are home to a large number of non-aviation businesses in addition to the many aviation related ones.
The airport and the neighbouring Riverside Golf Course together form a suburb which is usually referred to as Bankstown Airport, although the official name is Bankstown Aerodrome. The suburb is part of the Bankstown local government area and shares the postcode 2200 with its eastern neighbour Condell Park.
