Bareilly [pronunciation] is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Standing on the Ramganga River, it is the capital of Rohilkhand Division and is a center for the manufacture of furniture and for trade in cotton, grain, and sugar. The city's population in 2001 was 6,17,350.

This fast-growing city is also known as 'Bans-Bareilly', due to its big bamboo market. Bareilly is also famous for 'Surma'. It is famous as being the home-town of former Miss World Priyanka Chopra. Bareilly is also known as the counter-magnet city because it is equidistant from New Delhi and Lucknow and has a lot of potential for setting up industries to attract people to settle. Historically it was the part of the ancient Kingdom Panchal. In the Medieval period it was under Rohillas. India's premier veterinary research institute-IVRI is located here. The city was built by Mukrand Rai in 1657.

Another famous personality of Bareilly is Prof. Waseem Barellawi who is a great poet. A famous song of a Hindi movie containing word Bareilly was "Jhumka gira re bareilly ke bazzar mein." Bareilly's Trishul Airport had foxbats aircrafts which were capable to fly up to 1,00,000 feet. It is also know as the city of Temples. A temple known as Shri Laxmi Naraya Mandir is in Katra Manrya street near Bara Bazar the temple was buit by the efforts of a muslim named Chuuna Miya. There is famous temple of Shri DoopeswarNath which is assumed the place where Dropadi and Drishtadyumn was born by a grace of Maha shiva in Mahabahrat era. This was also capital of Dronacharya, guru of Arjun. One of the famous Ayurveda Practioners of the region was Late Vaidya Narrottam Tripathi. Bareilly is also famous for Kites and Manjha. The Zari-Zardozi handcraft work is famous. Regional passport office was setup in Bareilly especially to help people of hilly areas.
