Barnet Urban District

Encyclopedia : B : BA : BAR : Barnet Urban District

Barnet was a local government district in south Hertfordshire from 1894 to 1965 around the town of Barnet.

It was created an urban district in 1894 by the Local Government Act 1894, originally consisting of the parishes of Chipping Barnet, Hadley and South Mimms Urban. From 1905 it included Arkley and from 1914 Totteridge, both taken from the Barnet Rural District. A Rowley parish was added in 1935, created from areas previously in the parishes of Elstree, Ridge and Shenley in the Elstree Rural District.

In 1965 the urban district was abolished by the London Government Act 1963 and its former area transferred to Greater London from Hertfordshire. Its former area was combined with that of other districts to form the present-day London Borough of Barnet.
