A small village, of which the inhabitants are mostly descendants of the first settlers from Chatham and Harwick on Cape Cod, Massachusetts from the 1760s.

Barrington, to the locals, can mean as much as "(Lighthouse Route 3) from the Exhibition Grounds to Brass Hill" encompassing some side roads and lanes, to a general reference to the Municipality of Barrington, which is the western half (west of the Clyde River) of Shelburne County in Southern Nova Scotia. The Municipality of Barrington (which also happens to be the Lobster Capital of Canada) is also comprisesd of Cape Sable Island (exception: the Town of Clark's Harbour is its own municipality). The nearest commercial area to Barrington is Barrington Passage. Barrington Bay, Barrington River, and Barrington Lake are bodies of water that share the name with the village.
