- This article is about an episode of The Simpsons. For the quarterback, see Bart Starr.
Synopsis
When the children of Springfield are deemed too fat, parents start enrolling their kids in pee-wee football, including Bart Simpson. The job of coach originally is given to Ned Flanders, and the team is undefeated, but after Homer Simpson pushes Ned to the breaking point, the job is given to Homer.Homer proves to be an incompetent coach, who would rather cut his players then keep them. Despite the spectacular quarterback skills of Nelson Muntz, Homer favors Bart (who has little to no skill) as the quarterback for the team.
Bart causes the team to lose a game and, unable to stand his father's constant myopic view of him as a star quarterback, claims to be unable to play due to being hit by two cars. Homer wants to forfeit the game, but Bart tells him the truth about why he does not want to play. Nelson is brought back as quarterback, and Bart replaces Üter in the position of defensive tackle.
The team starts winning again. At the final game, the score is tied when Chief Wiggum comes looking to arrest Nelson. Bart decides to be a team player and falsely claims Nelson's identity. Bart thinks he is being arrested for a petty crime until Wiggum tells him he's being arrested for burglary and arson. The team wins, and the children unsuccessfully try to carry Homer off the field.
Cultural references
- The title of the episode is a reference to Bart Starr, the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers (an American football team) from 1956 to 1971. Bart wears uniform number 15, the same number that Starr wore.
- When Homer takes over as coach of the team he begins wearing Tom Landry's hat, which he previously bought in "You Only Move Twice". Tom Landry was head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from their inception in 1960 until 1988 and his hat is one of the most recognizable icons of the sport.
- There is a crossover in this episode from King of the Hill, a show that airs next to The Simpsons on FOX's Sunday line up and was co-created by former The Simpsons writer Greg Daniels. Chacacters from King of the Hill on in the episode include Mike Judge as Hank Hill. Also present are Peggy, Luanne, Bobby, along with Dale, Bill, and Boomhauer. Hank is the only character who has a speaking role.
Trivia
- The King of the Hill characters are not drawn in the same way as traditional Simpsons characters (yellow). Rather they are drawn the same way as in their own series, although a scene in the promo for this episode showed the King of the Hill characters with yellow Simpsons skin.
- Homer mentions a lot of the real names of people who work or use to work on the show while he is making the cuts during the closing credits. (see below)
- In one scene, when Rod and Todd are standing next to each other, their jersey numbers show 66 and 6, respectivly.

Cashier: Sure... one helmet coming up.
Marge: I was thinking more of... protection... down there (points down).
Cashier: Oh, why didn't you say so? Kneepads. You got it.
Marge: [very nervous laugh] I'm talking about his [mumbled] personal area.
Cashier: Ah ha. Say no more. I read you loud and clear. The old shoulderpads.
Marge: Look... I wanna cup.
Cashier: Cup? Could you spell that
Marge: C-U-P. I wanna C-U... oh my God!
- Homer: I'm tired of watching you dogging on that football field! From now on I'm gonna work you like a dog! Now go fetch me twenty laps!

- Homer: I didn't raise him to be a quitter. It must have been you. You quit every job you've ever had. Cop, pretzel vendor, church counsellor, professional gambler.
Marge: He's doing what he thinks is best.
Homer: Well, if quitting is the best, maybe I should just quit my job! [Homer walks over to the phone and dials Mr. Burns' number.]
Mr. Burns: Ahoy hoy?
Homer: Mr. Burns? This is Homer J. Simpson, the father of the big quitter! Well, I just wanted to tell you I'm a big quitter, too! And I quit! [Homer winks twice.]
Marge: Homer, Mr. Burns can't see you winking.
Homer: So-- [screams, hangs up phone.]
- Hank Hill [from King of the Hill]: We drove 2000 miles for this? (after Bart's team crushes Arlen's team)
- Nelson (out of breath after catching his own long pass): I gotta quit smoking.
- Homer: Hello, son. I wanna apologize. I just got so caught up trying to encourage you I was blinded to your stinky performance. If you forgive me I promise I'll never encourage you again.
- Ralph (to Bart, after being threatened by his teammates): "You're going to heaven!"
- Joe Namath: Heh heh. Poor Bart. You know, we had a lot of fun tonight. But, there's nothing funny about... vapour lock. It's the third most common cause of stalling. So please, take care of your car and get it checked. I'm Joe Namath. Good night!
- Homer: [Over the closing credits] Scully, you're cut. Brooks, Groening, Simon, you're all cut. Castellaneta, gone. Kavner, cut, Cartwright, cut. Smith, sorry, cut. Azaria, Shearer, you're cut. Firestone, you're cut. So is Judge. Namath, you stay. All of those people are cut. Johnson, Wolfe and Silverman are all cut. Goldfire, O'Brien gone. Cut, Elliot, I don't know what you're doing here because you're all cut. Pietela, Kuwahaha. There's so many cuts here, look, I'll just post them up and you see where your name is. Look how many cuts there are there. Woah boy! You're cut. All of you! You're cut. I cut you! [ Gracie Films logo, "shhhhh"] You're cut too, shusshy!
