Barton-upon-Irwell

Barton or Barton-upon-Irwell is an area of Eccles in the Metropolitan Borough of Salford, Greater Manchester. It is situated on the north bank of the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Irwell.

Proposed location of the 20,000 capacity City of Salford Stadium. If built, it will be the new home ground for the Salford City Reds Rugby League club, which is currently based at Weaste in Salford

Home of the oldest flying club in Great Britain, Barton Aerodrome opened on 29th January 1930. Also home to the world's first swinging aqueduct, which carries the Bridgewater canal over the Manchester ship canal. Source: Eccles library archives.
