Manchester Barton is a general aviation airfield located in Greater Manchester, UK, 8 miles East of Manchester City Centre and was Britain's first municipal airport. It features 4 grass runways and is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the UK. The airfield is open operates 7 days a week from 9am until sunset for fixed wing aircraft, (longer for commercial helicopters). The airfield is an important stopping off point for light aircraft and helicopters flying up and down the UK as it is centrally located and has an extremely large supply of aviation fuel, (Avgas 100LL and JetA1) availble.
History
Construction on Barton Aerodrome started in 1928 and was completed in 1930 when the first passenger flight occurred. The Aerodrome was owned by Manchester City Council until 2003 when the Peel Holdings Group purchased the land. The Aerodrome is now run on Peel's behalf by Barton Aerodrome Operations Ltd.Barton Aerodrome has changed relatively little since its opening and is considered a good example of the airfields of the 1930s. There are several historical items of note at Barton, a small museum in the Visitor Centre displays documents from the history of the original Manchester Airport. The Bomber Command Association also has a display at Barton Aerodrome.
The control tower, also built in 1930 is the oldest working example in the world and has been used in the Filming of many film and TV shows. The control tower underwent a major program of rebuilding and refurbishment in 2006. The Tower is protected by grade II listed status.

The oldest flying club in Britain, The Lancashire Aero Club is based at Barton, providing hangarage, flying training and a clubhouse for its members. LAC also operate an engingeering facility 'Light Planes Ltd' at the airfield.Ravenair
