Barun Goyot Formation

Encyclopedia : B : BA : BAR : Barun Goyot Formation

The Barun Goyot Formation is located within and is widely represented in the Gobi Desert basin of Mongolia. It was previously known as the Lower Nemegt Beds, occuring beneath the Nemegt Formation and above the Djadokhta Formation. It dates from the Late Cretaceous Period. It is uncertain whether it should be classed as Campanian or Maastrichtian, although the latter is less likely. It is approximately 4 inches in thickness. It preserves an environment of sand dunes, created from wind-eroded rocks (aeolian dunes). To date, the most famous specimen to be unearthed from the formation is that of a species of Velociraptor.
