The Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) is a professional association for baseball journalists writing for daily newspapers and magazines. The BBWAA was founded in 1908 to improve working conditions for sportswriters in the early part of the 20th century. Currently the BBWAA's major function is the election of players to the Baseball Hall of Fame; all writers with ten years of membership are eligible to vote.
History
The BBWAA was formed on October 14, 1908[link], in order to help improve the working conditions for sportswriters, who often had to deal with being crowded out of the pressbox, being relegated to the farthest seats from the field, and being forced to write in inclement weather.In 1910, the New York teams (The New York Giants, New York Highlanders, and the Brooklyn Dodgers) began requiring persons wishing to enter the pressbox to be members of the BBWAA. As a result, membership in the organization increased substantially.
