History

Batesville Casket traces its roots back to 1884 when John Hillenbrand began producing hand made wooden caskets. These caskets had ornate carvings made by casket and furniture companies. In 1906, Hillenbrand purchased the failing Batesville Coffin Company, and renamed it to Batesville Casket Company.

The company initially made only wood caskets until 1918. In 1918 the company began producing metal caskets, a practice that continued until the Second World War. While the company still produced wood caskets, it mainly concentrated on metal caskets. Once World War II began, the company halted making metal caskets. The company stepped up production of wood caskets, and supplied the military with a large number of these caskets.

In 1948, the company began producing metal caskets again. By 1953, Batesville stopped making wood caskets to solely produce metal caskets. In 1973, the company resumed production of wooden caskets once again.
