There were several major battles, Hill 700 and the famous Battle for Hill 260. This was jungle warfare, with many of the casualties resulting as a consequence of malaria and jungle rot- not fighting. Soldiers were shipped out after fighting at Henderson Field and The Battle of Matanikau in Guadalcanal. The 164th left Bougainville in November 1944.
Bougainville is the main island of North Solomons Province in Papua New Guinea, and is geographically part of the Solomon Islands chain.
