The Battle of Bougainville, as part of the Solomon Islands Campaign, took place starting in Nov. 1943 and lasted until April 1944. The first fighting took place with the United States Marines and then the United States Army and its Americal Division consisting of the 132nd 164th and 182nd Regiments plus additional Army Divisions. There were several major battles, Hill 700 and the famous Battle for Hill 260. This was jungle warfare, with many of the casualties resulting as a consequence of malaria and jungle rot- not fighting. Soldiers were shipped out after fighting at Henderson Field and The Battle of Matanikau in Guadalcanal. The 164th left Bougainville in November 1944.

Bougainville is the main island of North Solomons Province in Papua New Guinea, and is geographically part of the Solomon Islands chain.
