The Battle of Geonosis is a major conflict which occurred in the fictional Star Wars universe between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic. It was the enormous, opening battle of the Clone Wars, and was featured in the film [[Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones]]. The battle occurred after Separatist forces captured Obi-Wan Kenobi on Geonosis, and he was charged with spying for the Republic. Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padmé Amidala attempted to rescue Kenobi and were also captured and sentenced to death. The Galactic Senate granted Chancellor Palpatine "emergency powers" to deal with the crisis.
Following this act of war from the Confederacy of Independent Systems, a group of 212 Jedi, led by Master Mace Windu commenced invasion of the planet. He, along with Jedi Masters Kit Fisto and Ki-Adi-Mundi, led the Jedi to inflitrate the Geonosian Arena. They were rushed by the Separatist Battle Droid army, which they managed to hold off until Master Yoda arrived with the clone troopers and began pushing back the CIS. Using LAAT/i Gunships, with heavy AT-TE walkers on standby, the droids were pushed out of the arena, and out in a larger desert battle.
After the rescue of the Jedi, the droid and clone armies engaged one another in a complex series of engagements on a number of different fronts. The Republic's army landed in twelve Acclamator-class assault ships, offloading infantry, armoured vehicles, artillery and air support. The Separatist army consisted of droid infantry of varying strength and larger droid-controlled vehicles, such as the Homing Spider Droid and Hailfire Tank. Jedi and clone-piloted gunships took down many Techno Union transports which were offloading more infantry, and the 501st Legion of troops set up a command bunker in one of these ships.
Although the clone troopers were vastly outnumbered by droids, the droids were heavily exposed to attacks from the air by Republic gunships. The Republic's armored AT-TEs were strong against the lightly armored spider droids employed by the Separatists, but were vulnerable to the rockets on the hailfire droids, and many were destroyed. The Republic gunships were instrumental in clearing away the hailfire droids and allowing the AT-TEs to establish superiority on the battlefield. Also a successful sabotaging of the main factory on Geonosis, by a squad of Clone Commandos (Delta Squad), prevented the Separitists from using newly manufactured combat droids, to reinforce the army, prompting the Separatists to order an immediate retreat, to protect the Core balls.
Having beaten the droid army into retreat, Yoda took note of the fact that much of the Separatist starfleet was still grounded receiving shipments of droids when the Republic attacked. Lightly armored and vulnerable Techno Union starships attempted to withdraw immediately, but many were destroyed in the first wave of attacks from the Republic gunships. The Jedi master now ordered the army's artillery to attempt to take down as many of the Trade Federation Core Ships as possible, as they each held hundreds of thousands of deadly droids. In addition many Separitist ships that were able to escape the planet surface were destroyed by Republic crusiers, operated by dedicated clone gunners, who were furnished the vector co-ordinates, that were copied by Clone Commandos (Delta Squad) who had infiltrated one of the Core balls, disbaled its and copied its Vector co-ordinates for the entire Separitist fleet. The Republic was successful in this but it would seem evident that despite taking control of the surface of the planet (Commando teams infiltrated the spires holding the Geonosian cities, and many were able to spread chaos within the spires, although many clones lost their lives, due to improper intelligence and vast superior numbers), they were unable to capture the Separatist leadership and stop the war before it began, with the exception of Sun Fac, who was the leader of the Geonosian warriors, who was assassinated by the a squad of Clone Commandos namely Delta Squad.
In the midst of the battle the Separatist leader Count Dooku tried to escape to a hangar where his starship was located. A gunship carrying Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala gave chase. Upon arriving at Dooku's hangar, Kenobi and Skywalker engaged Dooku in a lightsaber battle where Dooku revealed himself to be using the arcane power of the Sith. Dooku defeated the two Jedi but their execution was prevented by the timely arrival of Master Yoda at the hangar. Yoda and Dooku engaged in a ferocious battle which ended when Dooku attempted to drop a crane on the wounded Obi-Wan and Anakin, distracting Yoda long enough to escape in his Solar Sailer moments before Amidala arrived with further reinforcements. Count Dooku flew to Coruscant, to meet with his master, who was settled in an abandoned district not far from the Jedi Temple. During his meeting with Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord ordered Count Dooku, now Darth Tyranus, to retreat to Raxus Prime to prepare a second battle front against the Republic. Meanwhile, the Army of the Republic was mobilized throughout the galaxy as the Clone Wars began.
This battle was held as "not victory" by Yoda, despite the rout of the droid army; more Jedi had been lost in a single engagement than had been lost for more than a thousand years and there were still more Separatist systems which held more droid armies. Further, the best chance the Jedi had to capture or kill Dooku was lost by Yoda, who chose instead to save Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Expanded Universe
According to the [[Star Wars: The Clone Wars]] video game, Mace Windu and Luminara Unduli were sent to eliminate the planet's defenses prior to the arena battle. Then, the duo cleared away the enemy forces at the landing zone to clear way for the transports carrying the Jedi. Mace helped protect the SPHA-T artillery walkers in a Republic IFT-X hover tank. Then, on his way to the Geonosian hangar, Windu faced and defeated 3 Dark Acolytes (mercenaries hired by Dooku),in Separatist Dark Speeders. There was also a space battle above, according to Expanded Universe lore.According to a deleted scene, Ki-Adi-Mundi and Plo Koon were assigned to the task of eliminating the droid control center. After a long time of destroying the center, they were surprised to see that the droids were programmed so they will not need activation by a control center.
Main Events of the Battle of Geonosis
- Eliminating the Defenses - Mace Windu and Luminara Unduli destroyed the planet's orbital cannons, which were opening fire on the Jedi Starfighters in space. They also escorted the Jedi transports to the arena.
- Jedi Surprise-Attack Battle - As Geonosians watched the execution of the two Jedi (Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi) and the senator (Padmé Amidala) in the open arena, two hundred saber-wielding knights, led by Jedi Master and Commander Mace Windu suddenly emerge from the stands and attempt to rescue the three prisoners. However, a prepared Separatist Droid Army quickly diminishes the number of Jedi warriors and surrounds them in the stadium.
- "Attack of the Clones"/Arena Battle - Jedi Master Yoda suddenly appears with a fleet of Republic gunships laden with deadly clone troopers to retaliate the Droid Army's onslaught. The surviving Jedi which include Windu, Kenobi, and Skywalker are able to escape aboard the ships as the clone troopers continue the fighting. The battle soons spreads to outside of the stadium in Geonosis's desert terrain.
- Main Battle (Battle of the Spires) - Yoda leads the clone soldiers to victory by destroying Separatist Techno Union and Trade Federation control ships as well as capturing the Geonosian command spires. The Separatist Council escapes however, including Poggle the Lesser (Geonosis's Archduke and Leader) and the official head of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Count Dooku. Dooku, though, is closely followed by Kenobi and Skywalker.
- Dooku's Duels - Before Dooku's escape ship is readied, Kenobi and Skywalker arrive and a three-way lightsaber duel ensues. Dooku quickly inflicts Kenobi with minor, but incapacitating wounds and then carries on to maim Skywalker. Before Dooku can board the ship, however, Jedi Master Yoda himself confronts the dark leader. In the furious lightsaber that follows, Dooku is able to escape only when he distracts Yoda by putting the lives of the two other, injured Jedi in danger. Dooku lands later on Coruscant to tell his master, the Dark Lord Darth Sidious, that the war has begun.
- Geonosis Space Battle - Not seen in the movie, Republic Forces attacked the planet's surface from above and fended off droid starfighters.
