Bavaria, a former French ally, joined the Sixth Coalition according to the Treaty of Ried concluded just before the battle of Leipzig. An Austro-Bavarian corps under prominent Bavarian Field marshal von Wrede attacked the retreating French army at Hanau, Hesse, however, were routed by Napoleon. Wrede received a wound in his head.
