Summary

The Battle of Jarama was a battle of the Spanish Civil War in February 1937. It was fought over the river Jarama, near the Spanish captial of Madrid. The Nationalist forces, led by Francisco Franco had failed to take Madrid in a frontal assault in November 1936 and then tried to cut the city off by crossing the Jarama to the north east and severing Madrid's communications with the Republican capital of Valencia. Although the Nationalists succeeded in crossing the river, they were unable to take the Madrid-Valencia road. The battle resolved itself as a bloody stalemate and ended with trench warfare reminiscent of the western front in the First World War.
