Encyclopedia : B : BA : BAT : Battle of Jemappes

The Battle of Jemappes (November 6, 1792) took place near the town of Jemappes in Hainaut, Belgium, near Mons. Charles François Dumouriez, in command of the French Revolutionary Army, defeated the greatly outnumbered Austrian army under the command of Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen and of François Sebastien Charles Joseph de Croix, Count of Clerfayt.

Immediate Military Context

Dumouriez, intent on invading the Netherlands, advanced late in the season and surprised the Austrians with greatly superior forces. At Jemappes he won for the French their first great victory of the war. Then, this time advancing boldly, he overran the whole country from Namur to Antwerp within a month.
