The naval Battle of St Mathieu took place on 10 August 1512 during the War of the League of Cambrai, near Brest, France, between an English fleet of 25 ships commanded by Edward Howard and a French fleet of 22 ships commanded by René de Clermont. After the English launched a surprise attack, all of the French ships except for Marie de la Cordelière and Nef de Dieppe retreated back to Brest, and these 2 ships fought 5 English ships (including Regent, Sovereign, Mary Rose and Mary James) for 7 hours before Regent and Marie de la Cordelière, stuck together, caught fire, probably caused by the English, and burned. 2 other English ships were sunk.
