Summary
The Battle of Yorktown (1862) was a battle of the American Civil War that was part of the Union offensive called the Peninsula Campaign. It happened when several regiments under Union Maj. Gen. George McClellan troops met a regiment of the Confederate troops near Yorktown, Virginia, along the York River. Considered a skirmish because of the limited number of troops involved, the battle resulted in an estimated 482 casualties. The resulting Union victory allowed the Union forces to continue their advance up the Virginia Peninsula towards Richmond.The battle took place near the 1781 siege of Yorktown, the last battle of the American Revolutionary War in the east.
