In September 1697 the Ottoman army was met by Austrian forces led by Prince Eugene of Savoy while crossing the Tisza (Tisa) river at Zenta. The Ottomans were surprised and destroyed, and the Ottoman grand vizier was assassinated on the battlefield in a Janissary mutiny.
The battle was a turning point for the Austrians. Not only did the Ottomans lose their artillery and royal treasure box, but Mustafa II, facing abandonment by France, was forced to sue for peace, leading to the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699.
