Encyclopedia : B : BA : BAY : Bayan (Avar Khagan)

Bayan was an Avar khagan between 562 and 602. The Avar name Bayan in the Caucasian Avar language means "conqueror" ("Behun"). It also could be translated as "Bo"=Army-Country of Huns. The word "Hun" or "Khun" in Caucasian Avar language means "To Hold" "To Belong". The Hun word for leader or king "Kagan" in Caucasian Avar language pronounced "QuaKhun" means "To Whom The Power Belongs" or "The Power Holder".
"Then Grimuald, unwilling to stir up civil war among the Langobards, sent word to the Cagan, king of the Avars, to come into Forum Julii with his army against duke Lupus and defeat him in war." (Paul the Deacon, Historia Langobardorum, V.xix, of events of the 660s)
