BeBits is a software download site for the BeOS and yellowTAB ZETA operating systems. It was started in 1999 by Sean Heber and Greg Nichols, and was then one of many BeOS software repositories, but is now the sole English-language one in existence. Virtually any software or driver for BeOS has an entry on BeBits, and the site has entered the vocabulary of BeOS users much in the same way Freshmeat has of Linux users.
BeBits as a trend
BeBits, being a sort of Freshmeat for BeOS users, has gained enormous popularity over the years. It is referred to as the nearly official BeOS software repository. Similar to Google's popularity in the computer society.BeBits over time
Up to this day, BeBits contains many BeOS software links from 1999 (as well as some mirrors) and has never gone on a file purge. The site's design hasn't changed much over the years, and those who remember it back from 2000 will be surprised to discover that the look of the website has been preserved, along with the categorizing system.Nowadays, many finished components of Haiku are placed on BeBits, so that they can be easily found. Though, this is only temporary until Haiku is officially released.
Its format has been copied for GnomeFiles, as it is one of the easiest to use download repositories for both users and developers.
