Becoming X

Encyclopedia : B : BE : BEC : Becoming X

Becoming X is the debut album from Sneaker Pimps released in 1996. The album was a smash in England and later the tracks "6 Underground" and "Spin Spin Sugar" would become hits in US clubs as well. Vocalist Kelli Ali [known as Kelli Dayton on this album] was featured on this album only. She was later asked to leave the band by Chris Corner, who wrote most of the songs on the album, so that he could become the band's vocalist. The album was almost solely responsible for introducing the US mainstream to trip-hop, as many Americans hadn't yet heard of Portishead or Massive Attack. "How Do", the last track on Becoming X, is a cover of a song from the cult movie The Wicker Man. Britt Ekland performed the song admirably (and completely naked) in the movie; Sneaker Pimps' version begins with a short sound clip from the movie, with Ekland's voice in it. It is in turn used in the movie Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes).

The album later spawned a remix album called Becoming RemiXed with DJs such as Paul Oakenfold taking a stab at the albums tracks.

Kelli Ali would later start a solo career and to date has put out 2 albums on the One Little Indian label, made famous by Bjork.

Chris Corner also has a solo album under the name I Am X
