Belle Fourche is a city in Butte County, South Dakota, USA. The population was 4,565 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Butte County[Geographic references#6GR6].
Geography
Belle Fourche is located at (44.667343, -103.850350)[Geographic references#1GR1].According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.4 km² (3.2 mi²). 8.2 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (2.48%) is water.
Belle Fourche has been assigned the ZIP code 57717, and the FIPS place code 04380.
The geographical center of the United States is 40 km (25 mi) NE of the city.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 4,565 people, 1,854 households, and 1,186 families residing in the city. The population density was 557.8/km² (1,446.9/mi²). There were 2,122 housing units at an average density of 259.3/km² (672.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.03% White, 0.15% African American, 1.91% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 1.27% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.70% of the population.There were 1,854 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% were non-families. 30.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $26,875, and the median income for a family was $35,506. Males had a median income of $26,763 versus $15,275 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,051. About 9.0% of families and 12.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.8% of those under age 18 and 7.7% of those age 65 or over.
